purpose of subscribe/unsubscribe?

I'm using Outlook 2003, and my account is using IMAP. What is the
purpose of using the subscribe/unsubscribe feature for the folders? I
am able to get emails from folders that are not subscribed to, so this
is confusing me. Thanks!

When I try it, only subscribed folders appear in my IMAP folder list.
