pst vs. ost file

Currently I use Outlook 2003 in a non Exchange situation. I am
preparing to move to Hosted Exchange. Currently I backup outlook.pst
to a home server every night. This has saved me on one occasion as I
had a computer crash but was able to get Outlook back to a previous
state very quickly. Do I understand correctly that when I move to
hosted exchange Outlook will no longer use the the .pst file but will
use a .ost file? I understand that by using hosted exchange my backup
is basically on the exchange server but I would still feel beter
having a local backup. If I backup the ost file will I have usable
information much like a pst file that could get me up and running
quickly if both my local .ost and my exchange server information
became corrupt?
