pst passwords - need to disable and/or recover

Hi,

As an organisation, we are required to store all emails for 7 years. We
store all emails on a backup tape in the format of a pst file.

If during that time we are required to restore a pst file for some reason,
and the pst is password protected, how is it possible to open? Is there
somekind of recovery agent to do this? Or is a 3rd party application required
to retrieve/break the password? I know that Microsoft do not support lost
passwords in any way, an answer for this must be made available for company's
in these situations.

On another side for future in this aspect, is it possible for the systems
administrator to disable the permission to allow pst's to be password
protected? I have had a look in the ORK for this option but cannot find it. I
can find how to disable the ability to create a pst, but this is not what I
want. I want staff to be able to create pst's, but not password protect them.
I would like to set this up as a domain wide policy if at all possible.

Thanks in advance.

I have had a look at this small app. But it's requirement is that it uses 3
times the amount of the original pst file. Therefore if I have a pst of close
to 2gb it requires 6gb for that one password resolution.

This really is something I would rather workaround if possible.

To be able to disable the allowing to use a pst password would provide this
functionality for all future usage so that a 3rd party tool will not be
required.

Whether it is OL2003 or pre-2003 pst file is irrelevant. As some old users
obviously would have been using previous versions before we upgraded and they
left the company.

I am guessing that it is not possible though. No info regarding disabling
passwords has been mentioned anywhere. That is unfortunate and silly from an
adminstrative point. The network/systems administrators should have full
control over everything that runs on the network and on the systems. However
OL does not provide this.

Disappointing MS!
I guess i must go with a 3rd party app.

A gb size pst is v.relevent for a pre OL2003 format file as it is of a size
in which corruption takes place.
