Hi everybody,
In my company we have some laptops with its outlook installed that
retrieves its pst files from the LAN (for backup reasons). Is it
possible to configure a secondary pst file (local) for the case that
the laptop is not in the LAN, so, in case that there's no access to the
main pst, automatically switches to the secondary one. And, there's any
way to mantain these pst files syncronized automatically?

Thanks in advance,

Marc Soleda.

How big are these PST files? If you keep them small by good archiving you
might be able to use XP's Offline Folders (not Outlook's Offline Folders) to
keep the directory that the PST is in synchronized and available if you're
off network. I use it to keep my My Documents from home available where ever
I am

Note that this is not supported, and can cause problems. PST files are meant
to be stored/accessed locally on the hard drive, not across a network
connection.

Vince suggested Offline Files - I personally dislike Offline Files as I've
had many problems with this. Might also want to check out SecondCopy 2000
from www.centered.com for an alternative.

I've never used them for PSTs but I've had pretty good luck using them for
My Documents and my favorites. What sort of trouble have you had with them?

Thanks Vince,
It's a little bit tricky but I've finally done it as you said. The
tricky part is because WinXP doesn't allow to make this kind of
operation over a pst file just because it's a binary file and there
aren't merge tools available.

To avoid this problem I've followed the followig KB and now all works
fine: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/252509/en-us

Now it seems that it works well but I'm also intersted to know what
kind of problems have you encountered Lanwench?

Lost data, and tons of it (particularly with lots 'n lots of folders
selected for offline use). A client once wept because all the stuff she
worked on over a weekend disappeared (the changes, rather)....

I disable it by default when I set up shares, and disable it in group
policy....SecondCopy works a lot better and doesn't leave any irritating
little shards of itself all over the place...the files just sync nicely.

Also, PST files can't be made available offline, if I'm not mistaken....same
with a bunch of other file types if you don't do registry hacks.

have to actively set this up.

Right. Or not use offline files. ;-)
