PS/2 to USB mouse adapter

I recently bought a wireless keyboard/mouse combo and since my old rig
doesn't have a PS/2 port, I bought a PS/2 to USB adapter to plug the
mouse into. However, Windows '98 doesn't recognize the mouse. I
expected the mouse to just be recognized like a USB mouse. Please
reply w/ any ideas as to how to make Windows recognize this mouse.

Thanks.

I'm a bit confused here?
Why do you need the adaptor? The way it reads the keyboard/mouse you
bought is USB and should therefore just p-lug into the USB ports
?

No, the mouse is PS/2 and the keyboard is plugged into the AT keyboard
port through an adapter.

To clarify, basically, the motherboard is an old AT motherboard w/ no
PS/2 ports. I tried to install this mouse by using a PS/2 to USB
adapter I bought over the web, since the rig does have USB ports.
When I try to plug the mouse into the USB port through the adapter, it
gets recognized as unknown device. (Not good.)
