having a problem with an xp home pc not being able to attach to internet and
also the cursor is constantly oscillating between regular arrow and arrow
with small hourglass. prutfct.exe is a running thread that is using about
20-30 % cpu cycles, and when i try and kill it, it just comes right back up.
I searched Symantec, MSKB and also did a general web search and came up
empty. does anyone know what this process is for and how I get rid of it if
its malicious. Thank you.

Mike,

prutfct.exe looks like a malware process. Follow the malware removal advice listed here: http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.php. This helps in eliminating most of the malware, but some complex cases require user intervention and examination of the HijackThis log. If that is the case follow step 8. "IF THERE IS STILL A PROBLEM"
