Proxy Encryption, privacy on a LAN

Pop Quiz

What I would like to do is install some sort of web proxy software on my
server at home, with a client on my laptop so that where ever I am the
traffic is encrypted on my machine and sent to the web proxy. It is then
decrypted at my proxy and sent onto its destination.

The encrypt I would like, would ideally encrypt a URL using something
simple like ROT13 or whatever on client side, then this scrambled URL gets
sent to my web proxy where it is decrypted and retrieves the webpage.

I know that there are a number or secure IM packages that need to be
installed at either end, where it is encrypted at one end and then
decrypted at the other.

Does anything like this exist?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

That's called a virtual private network (VPN).

Basically, you want a proxy (connect to your home system, then surf from
there, so that it looks like you are surfing from your home
computer--like an anonymous proxy).

With XP Pro, you can use Remote Desktop. With Home, you will have to
find some software on the Internet. You are looking for VPN software.

By the way, if you are trying to bypass some security at work, for
example, most network security administrators can detect this and turn
it off.

It can be done, but your not hiding nothing from your network admins -
they can detect the traffic, origination and destination IP's and if
this is a company laptop, even have the capability to decrypt what you
so stealthily encrypted. Why risk your job over something this
stupid, just wait and do your porn before/after work at home.

I currently use RealVNC with 3rd party SSL encryption, which is as good as
a VPN, but not as reliable, as it has a tendency to wig out and die or kill
the connection unexpectedly.

I was just looking for something a bit more reliable than this, that wasn't
using a VPN :/

Also, I'm not trying to bypass security at work :) I'm doing some R&D for
our development department and the above specification was one of the
option I'm trying.

Any further info would be of great help.

Thanks.

I was wondering when I would get a response like this, though to be fair I
didn't explain the exact situation too clearly.

I'm doing R&D for our development department, and this is one of the
options in the specification I was given.

P.S I always doing my porn surfing from home, it's the only way to be sure!
