Protection will not allow me to insert a comment

We have just upgraded to Microsft Office 2003 and now all of our protected
cells will not allow us to insert comments. They are fine on our old system
Office 97 but as soon as we open it and save it as 2003 we loose this very
important option!!
Please assist!!

check edit objects
