Protection Scan Not Working?

G

Guest

I attempted to run the Protection Scan as instructed by the Virus Alert I
received after my PC blue-screened and crashed.

When the Protection Scan was ran in Safe mode, as instructed by the Alert,
the Scan seemed to work fine, i.e. picked up a few viruses, but there was no
(visible) 'Next' button to continue when the scanning was complete.

I then reverted back to 'regular' mode to try the Protection Scan. Still no
'Next' button appeared.

What gives? Please advise.

Thanks a bunch,

Johnny

What "protection scan" ?

What software generated a "vius alert" ?

Please be VERY specific about your problem.

| Virus Alert
| I don't remember how the virus alert came up. But here's the home page for
| the alert I recevied:
| http://oca.microsoft.com/en/
|
| Here's the link to the Protectin Scan:
| Protection Scan
| http://safety.live.com/site/en-US/center/howsafe.htm
|

Please don't use http://safety.live.com for anti virus scans. It has one of the poorest
track records in the anti virus industry and it is a Beta application/web site.

For non-viral malware...

Please download, install and update the following software...

* Ad-aware SE v1.06
http://www.lavasoft.de/
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
http://www.lavasoft.de/ms/index.htm

* SpyBot Search and Destroy v1.4
http://security.kolla.de/
http://www.safer-networking.org/microsoft.en.html

* SuperAntiSpyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/superantispywarefreevspro.html

After the software is updated, I suggest scanning the system in Safe Mode.

I also suggest downloading, installing and updating BHODemon for any Browser Helper Objects
that may be on the PC.

* BHODemon

For viral malware...

* Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file. http://www.ik-cs.com/multi-av.htm

Hey David,

Thanks for the thorough response.

I finally got around to working on my PC at home, only to discover that
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe isn't working, i.e the
site for multi_av.exe file can not be found.

Should I check back later or would you recommend a different site? (I think
my pc has a viral malware.)

Thanks!

Johnny

Check the site again. There was a problem earlier that has now been corrected and you
should be able to download the Multi AV Scanning Tool --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe

David-

The site's working; I successfully downloaded multi_av.exe.

The question now is: How do I know which component I need to download-
Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky?

Any or all.

I wrote the software with four AV scanners because one may catch what another may miss.
Additionally each scanner has its advantages and disadvantages.

I ran all four scanners. Sophos picked up a few trojans in the WINNT folder
right away. The other scanners, e.g. McAfee, also detected them, and
indicated they're been removed.

Now I just need to run everything in Safe Mode.

I'll post the results when everything's done. Seems like we're in the
clear.

Thanks,

Johnny
