Protecting student folders from deletion or being moved

Greetings,
I work at an elementary school and although I have full admin rights over
the computers in the Lab, 35 Dells running XP pro, I have not found a way to
protect the student folders from being moved or deleted while still giving
the students access to the contents. I realize this is not a question worthy
of this message board but I'm desperate for help. The folder structure is as
follows...
Grade Level/Teacher Name/Station Number. We have over 700 students with a
minimum of 120 users a day.
This is a brand new PC computer lab and we are all used to working with
Macintosh systems. Is it possible to protect the folders while still giving
students access to the contents?

I'm pretty sure there's someway to make it read-only; however I'm not sure
how to do this with folders. If you're concerned about word documents you
can password protect them by going to Tools, Options, click on the Security
tab, and then type in a password to Modify which will allow the students to
view the document freely; however, they will need a password if they want to
edit it. Hopefully, one of the more experienced tech people will come and
tell you how to make your file read-only.

I appreciate your answer and the time taken to write it. I'm sorry that
I wasn't very clear about my needs. I'm not really concerned about the
documents inside the folders. Reorganizing the folders at each station on a
regular basis and having to recreate missing folders is the main problem.
I’m sure this problem will lessen as the students adjust to using PC’s verses
Macintosh stations. I was just hoping there was a way to protect the folders
while giving them access to their saved documents and with out having to
password protect each and every folder on every station. In truth, with over
700 students it would be almost impossible. Our school has grades k-5,
there are approximately 5 teachers per grade level and each student is
assigned a station in the lab corresponding to their student number in the
class room. Every station therefore has a separate folder for each class and
each student. It was done this way so that any student can still access his
personal folder number from any station in the lab and from any class in the
school that has PC access to the server. As far as the actual content of the
folders go, each student is responsible for saving their documents correctly
and printing a copy. I just need a way to keep those clumsy little right
clicking fingers from sliding folders around or hitting delete out of
frustration. You would be amazed what trouble kids can get into and what
lengths they go though to avoid asking for help.

Thanks again Elendil and thank you also for reminding me to password protect
the instructor documents. Your answer reminded me that I need to protect the
templates created for class assignments.

You need to configure "special" permissions on the folders. First simple
file sharing needs to be disabled to access the security tab of the folders
via GUI if that has not been done already which should be if you are in an
Active Directory domain.

Then go to the folder and in properties select security. Give the
appropriate user/group read/list/execute/write assuming you want them to
create files. Then go to advanced and select add to add the user/group again
, and then check the special permissions that you want them to have which
may be all or everything but full control/change permissions/take ownership
and in the "apply onto" box select files only. You may have to do some
tweaking to get it to work exactly the way you want but that is the general
idea to use special permissions. --- Steve
