Is there a way to protect part of a document? I've created a table and do
not want others to change the titles in the top column. TIA!
If you and everyone else who will edit the document all use Word 2003,
then you can do it fairly simply. You'll use the Protect Document task
pane to protect the whole document, and then mark all the parts of the
document outside the title row as being editable by everyone.
If anyone with an earlier version of Word has to work on the document,
though, that method is no good. Those users would see the entire
document as protected.
If that's the case, you'll have two alternatives. The first is to
place a text form field in each cell of the table below the title row.
Insert a section break before and after the table.
The other alternative is to split the table between the top row and
the second row, and insert section breaks before and after the title
row. (You can't insert a section break inside a table.) If you format
the paragraph mark between the two tables to a font size of 1 point,
you can almost make them look like one table again.
In either case, in the Tools > Protect Document dialog, select Forms;
click the Sections button; and uncheck all the sections except the one
that contains the table or title row.
