protected forms

I have created a "fillable" form through the use of a series of tables
containing text fields and check box fields from the forms toolbox. However,
I now find that I am unable to protect the document. The "lock" icon on the
forms toolbar is greyed out and unavailable.

Where have I gone wrong in this regard?

One possibility is mentioned here:

Try selecting everything in the form except the last paragraph mark,
copying it, and pasting it into a new blank document.

Thanks so much for passing along the accompanying link.

Does the possibility exist that one must create an isolated template upon
which to base a protected form?

Having subsequently read through some of the other posts, I tried
establishing a template first and then basing the protected form upon it and
the problem seems to have been resolved. Could that indeed be a factor when
creating a protected form?

Although it isn't _required_ that you base a protected form on a unique
template, it's certainly my recommendation that you do so.

The reason that a new template resolved your problem was that the original
form document was probably damaged in some way, whereas the new template has
no damage. Although the same type of damage could eventually occur in a
template, it's much less likely because you don't usually edit a template
repeatedly.
