prosessor fan making noise

I have installed windows 2000 on a PC which before had
windows NT installed. Now the prosessor fan makes a LOT of
noise just when I am doing a little bit more than the most
simple tasks. Why? The computer is Compaq pentium III with
933 Mhz and 256 mb RAM. It is "prepared" for windows 2000.
I have installed with NTFS file-system, and given the hard
drive two partitions, one with 13 GB and one with 5 GB. Any
suggestions anyone?!

Fans get noisy when:
- an errant cable is rubbing against the blades...
- ditto a blob of dust or some other foreign object...
- they are about to fail...a bearing is burning out, etc
- they're thermostatically switched on, are usually off, are turned on,
and you're not used to hearing their sound.
