properly using msconfig?

D

Daniel Kaplan

why is it that when i uncheck ANYTHING in the startup tab, the next time i
restart XP, i get a msg saying that i made a change in msconfig, and
therefore it is starting up in some type of safemode, and the next time i
restart XP, my changes are undone.

what gives? if i can't use msconfig to make changes permanent, what's the
point?

thanks

Daniel,

You need to check the box that comes with that message after restarting,
then click OK. Whenever a change is made in your startup folder a registry
key is placed in the Run command of the registry located at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run.
Also, after you uncheck a startup app go into the 'General' tab and make
sure the 'Normal Startup....' is selected before rebooting.

Msconfig is designed to be a troubleshooting tool, not a "startup
configurer." To cease the selective startup notifications, either
return your settings to the way they were, or permanently remove the
undesirable programs from your startup configuration.

In most cases, with "well-mannered" applications, it's usually as
simple as opening the undesired program and deselecting the option to
"display icon in the system tray" or to "start when Windows starts."

Additionally, Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up and C:\Documents and
Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up folders, and in the
system registry, primarily in the
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.

Daniel,

I misread your e-mail. My last statement should have read:
Also, after you uncheck a startup app go into the 'General' tab and make
sure the 'Selective Startup', not 'Normal Startup' is selected before
rebooting.
Sorry,

It's acting as designed. Just check the box when the message appears
after the first reboot when making changes to tell it not to remind you.

msconfig is intended to be used as a troubleshooting tool not a startup
manager.

[[System Configuration Utility (msconfig.exe) allows you to temporarily
change the way Windows XP Professional starts by disabling startup programs
and services individually or several at a time.]]

[[System Configuration Utility (Msconfig.exe) automates the routine
troubleshooting steps that Microsoft Product Support Services technicians
use when diagnosing Windows configuration issues. You can use this tool to
modify the system configuration through a process of elimination with check
boxes, reducing the risk of typing errors.]]

From StartMan Help:
[[The correct method for removing any startup is to use the program that
placed it there in the first place. The reason for this is that the program
would otherwise be unaware of the changes you'd made with StartMan or any
other startup managers, and some will actually restore their startups
automatically, thus creating duplicates. Therefore always check the main
program's own options or preferences, or the system tray icon's options (if
the program has one) before resorting to any startup manager - including
this one. Startup managers should ONLY be used to disable startups
temporarily - such as when troubleshooting - or to remove non-essential
startups that have no removal options whatsoever. ]]

StartMan is a GOOD Utility, I use it all the time, especially after
installing software. Everything you install wants to run at startup.
StartMan shows where something starts from. Check out the Help in StartMan
also! You can either have StartMan disable startups or just use it to find
where something is loading from.

Startup Control Panel is another pretty good application.

[[Startup Control Panel is a nifty control panel applet that allows you to
easily configure which programs run when your computer starts. It's simple
to use and, like all my programs, is very small and won't burden your
system. A valuable tool for system administrators!]]

Download the EXE Version and just extract the executable wherever you want.
