Every time I close a Word document, I am asked if I want to save changes,
even though I have done absolutely nothing but open the document. This is a
relatively recent and very irritating change in behaviour.

Thanks.

Though You Have Made No Changesâ€

Thanks Suzanne. Unfortunately this article applies to Word 2002. I'm using
Word 2000, which doesn't have Smart Tags. Sorry, I should have mentioned my
version of Word in my initial post.

Any other ideas?

Cheers.

As an experiment I created a new blank documents and saved it. When I
reopened and then closed it, there was no prompt for a save.

Next I created another new document, this time with a single word in it.
When I reopened and then closed it, the save prompt appeared. I had made no
changes, did not print or print preview, didn't check properties. It has no
date, no page number, no fields whatsoever.

Word never used to do this, so I guess I've done something inadvertently
that is causing this behaviour.

I'm really stumped.

This was so annoying that I finally uninstalled Word, then reinstalled it.
Problem solved.
