I need a template, in Word or Excel, to manage the work flow of projects.
Need to capture tasks, timelines, notes, progress [problems
encountered/resolution]

Sorry, I don't have such a template handy. You could certainly try to
create one (from your choice of applications, I'd try Excel).

More obvious choices (from Microsoft's portfolio) would be Project (and
maybe Outlook).
