When I view "All Programs" some programs seem to be highlighted with a cream
colour, can you tell me why?

That's letting you know they are new programs you have installed.

Hi,

XP does this to indicate newly installed programs.
This higlighted colour will disappear after a while (once
you've used the new program)

To cancel this, Right click the Start button>>Properties>>Start
Menu>>Customize>>Advanced tab. At Start menu settings uncheck *Highlight
newly installed programs* and click OK.
