Many of my programs have sudenly stopped working including
regedit with the erroe message :-
"This file does not have a program associated with it for
performing this actionCreate an association in the Folders
options Control Panel".
Been advised my registry is at fault - how can I get back
up and running - tried to get Restore Point but system
will not run Help and Support

Find the program associated with the error message ( it usually provides the
file name, which you can write down and type into the search tool to find the
location of the problem file and which program is associates with it. Once
you find the program, simple uninstall and reinstall it, if it is an
operating system file, you can always run the repair from your cd, which
either method of repair ( the second option is the recovery console using
(C:\> chkdsk /r) from the recovery console will check the registry.

Try running the file association fix for .exe files from Doug Knox's
site. Click on Win XP Fixes, then File Association fixes.
