Programs will not open!

Hello. I have a very unusual problem..Internet Explorer,
My Computer, Network Neighborhood, Control Panel,
etc...will not open whether I click on the shortcut or
from the start menu.
I havent received any error messages..just an hourglass
that goes away after a few seconds.but still, the program
does not start.
I was able to run windows update from the "Help and
support link, and was finally able to run my anti-virus...
(Windows XP Home and Mcaffee anti-virus are fully
updated.) Anti-virus did not find anything..

Any ideas?

See if you have anything like spyware/malware - just a suggestion

I had already tried that, but it didnt help...You use the
same spyware apps that I do...
