my computer is running really slow - slow to open a new page in a browser,
slow to download messages, slow to switch programs or call them up ect
ect...

when I hit cont/alt/delete I see that I have 57 processes running .... are
these the programs I have running in the background - and if so - how can I
reduce the number of programs running in the background?

thanks
Pam

You need to find the specific process in that application that's taking all
the CPU resources and slowing down your PC.

To do this try Process Explorer:
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html

Once you have Process Explorer installed and running:
Click on the CPU column to sort processes by %CPU usage.
Then click on the process that using most or all the CPU %, once it
highlighted, right click
and from the options listed select: google
This should display what out there on the web about that process.
Note: some entries like Explorer and svchost may need to be expanded to show
the detail,
(sub processes), in this case click on the + located to the left on the
entry.

For control of which applications run in the background use either msconfig
or AutoRuns
For msconfig: Start/Run and enter msconfig, then look in the Starup and
Services tabs.

Autoruns from SysInternals:
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Autoruns.html
This will show all apps/etc. that load/run when you first boot and
selectively allow you to stop any that you don't want.

Download the free program called Startup from http://www.mlin.net/. Once
installed you go to settings/controlpanel and select startup. Remove the tick
from the programs you do not want to start.

57 processes is not a lot, assuming you have sufficient memory installed,
and sufficient free space.
I'd suggest you scanned for malaware using MS Defender, SpyBot and
Adaware. - use all three.
Then perhaps run an online AV scan at eg Symantec.com.
You might also want to run DiskCleanup

thanks - I'll try this and see what happens

appreciate ALL the help I've received lately on this newsgroups - you guys
are invaluable!
