After several attempts I finally installed SP2 (in safe mode from CD) on my
computer and everything was working fine, I immediately created a restore
point (just in case). Windows update informed me I had updates to install
(11), after i installed these updates I E doesn't work neither does outlook
express, system information or system restore, the updates are not shown in
add/remove programs. In the modname in the error report it says mshtml.dll
for all these problems, can I re-install this dll to solve the problems and
if so is it on winxp pro CD? this is a new install, 2.6meg processor, 1gig
ram,18gig free space on C drive, many thanks

All things being equal you shouldn't have had to resort to
installing SP2 from safe mode in the first place.
This suggests that something is badly amiss with your system, did
you follow the instruction from the MS web site regarding installing
SP2, closing programs such as anti virus etc, [yes I know you used
the CD].
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/sp2_whattoknow.mspx

Not knowing your system's specs etc it's a guess that either it
is marginal with regards to running XP, or it is /was infected
with some malware/ virus when you did the update.
Or you had everything AND the kitchen sink running in the
background during the procedure, not being facetious here but
doing major updates like this requires attention to the fine
print.

Dear Li'l Roberto,
thnks for your reply, I installed SP2 in safe mode on advice from microsoft
support, I virus scanned and ran adaware before installing, I dont run
programs in safe mode except for de-bugging. All i'm missing is mshtml.dll, i
now have the 2 patches to recover from this, however, when i try to install
the first patch (813489) it says I need to have IE6 installed (it Is) if I
try and re-install IE6 the program says I already have a newer version
installed... any ideas

Looks like you just had bad luck with the upgrade ......
The file you need is in the i386 folder on your XP CD.
Boot to the recovery console and give this command from the
C:\prompt
expand mshtml.dl_ c:\windows\system32\mshtml.dll
