"programs" have stopped working.

I am new to Windows Vista! It has taken me back to beginner! Everytime I
click on PC Tune-Up or a few other programs, I get the msg: "PC Tune-U has
stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly."
Microsoft help just took me in fruitless circles for days, so I asked PC
Tune-Up. They could not figure it out & reported that their program is
completely compatible to Vista. What have I missed? I no computer guru.

Hi Donna Jo,

Well, I've never heard of "PC Tune-up"; I guess it is some kind of utility
application. But to find out why it isn't working, you can do this:

- go toControl Panel;
- click on System and Maintenance;
- click on Problem reports and Solutions
- click on Check for new Solutions

This will do 2 things: (1) report th eerrors you saw to Microsoft. If they
are caused by a problem in Windows, they can fix it. If the errors are
caused by a problem in PC Tune-up, Microsoft can report the findings to the
maker of that software.

If an existing hotfix is available from Microsoft, you will be prompted to
download and install it.

You can also click on View Problem History, to see the records that Vista
has kept of these application errors. If you double-click on an error, it
will show you some detailed information about teh problem - suchas whether
it was an access violation (0xC0000005) or similar error, and so on. Some of
this info is a bit opaque, if you aren't a programmer or computer
technician; but it will help narrow down the exact error you are seeing.

Other folks might have additional ideas for you; hope this helps a bit.

For me PC Tune up is Snake Oil. Using a Registry cleaner is not recommended. If you do not know your registry and how it works then do not use any automated reg tool.

It can cause more problems then it is worth. Contrary to popular belief cleaning the registry will not enhance the performance of your OS

Many programs that work fine with earlier Windows versions do not work with
Vista. In addition, many system utility programs utilize Windows system
files (i.e. chkdsk.exe, autochk.exe, defrag.exe) to accomplish system tune-up
tasks. Vista system files can become corrupted and processes like error
checking and file defragmentation can stop working. If your system utility
program utilizes Vista system files and these files are corrupt, your program
will not work. Check and see if you can run Vista error checking on C disk,
or the Vista file defragmentation. If these work fine, it may be that your
program is incompatible with Vista.

I went to the New Solutions as you suggested. There were not any. I went
to the problem history. Not only did I have "not working" but so many
programs are "not compatible" or also not working. Your suggesteions are
helpful as well. I am learning things here that Compaq help does not tell
me. Their answers take me in circles without really answering the problem.

I am wondering if I should take my computer back to the factory settings &
start over. ????? And if you all think so, exactly how would I do this.
Thank you, Andrew, and all of you.

I had PC Tune-Up free download when I was using Windows 2000. My former
computer was so slow, even my defrag & registry cleaner made no difference,
that is, until I used PC Tune-Up. What a difference. So when I bought this
new computer with Windows Vista, I bought the tune-up program. Donna

Thank you. I did go to error checking. While away, it was going. Came
back, gone so I don't know if it repaired anything. So, I am repeating as
the top box was checked but not the bottom repair. Thank you for teaching me
about this function. I am hoping that somehow, I will be able to get to the
bottom of this problem.

What other programs were listed as "not compatible", and/or "not working"?

A re-installation might be helpful, but if we're not careful, you'll just
end up in teh same place you are today. So it'll help to know the apps you
need to run.

Andrew,
Programs with compatibility problems are (going back from August to June):
Adobe Acrobat 5; Adobe Gamma, Adobe Flash Player Plugin Installer, AutoPlay

Shield Update Service Update Manager Applet, Microsoft Office Word Viewer
2003 Self-Extracting Installer, nu3_trybuy.exe (don’t know what this is),
PackageForTheWeb Stub, PopCDRun.exe, QuickTime Control Panel, Setup Factory
setup launcher, Setup Launcher, Start.exe, Uninstall.exe

Programs that stopped working &/or responding: PC Tune-Up, DQL WinSe
Application, ecard.exe (Don’t know what this is), Microsoft Management
Console, Microsoft Office Word (3), Notepad (3), PccHCMS (?PC-cillin?),

Sorry for the length of this post.

I did the error checking again. It must have been fine as it closed itself
while we were out this evening. Donna

Many of the programs you list are outdated and will not work with Vista. For
example, go to the Adobe website and download the latest Adobe Flash Player,
etc. Sometimes Windows Updates will corrupt other programs on your computer.
The workaround for this is to uninstall the program, then reinstall it; try
this with PC Tuneup.

I will try to find updates for these & uninstall versions that I presently
have. I signed up for Windows Vista Updates. I tried uninstalling and
reinstalling PC TuneUp 3 times. No luck. They do say that it is compatible
with Vista. Thank you for suggesting this.

Adobe Acrobat 5; Adobe Gamma,

Is that Acrobat Reader? or the whole Acrobat application? Acrobat 8.0 is
the only version of the full Acrobat product which works well on Vista. FWIW
I'm running Acrobat 8 and having no problems on Vista (I did have Acrobat 7,
but upgraded after similar bad expereinces)
QuickTime Control Panel,

Make sure you download Quicktime 7.2 or later from Apple, any earlier
version will have problems.
Setup Factory > setup launcher, Setup Launcher, Start.exe, Uninstall.exe

I don't recognise the other apps but it looks like most are installer
utilities.
Programs that stopped working &/or responding:
PC Tune-Up,

No idea what that is but, you probably don't need it anyway. Most 3rd party
utility programs need to be updated for Vista.

Basically I think you need to upgrade your main applications to current,
Vista-compatible versions. Then your system should be in reasonable shape.

Hope it helps,
