Programs do not start

A friend of mine is running Windows XP on a P4 1.8 GHZ
with 384 MB of RAM. Sudennly some programs do not start
anymore like msconfig, Norton Anti Virus and a couple of
ganes. They sort of come up but closes again. In Safe
mode at least msconfig works. I have tried quite a few
cleaning up programs but nothing changes. Any ideas? I do
not fell like reanstalling because he has quite a lot
installed.

You have a virus on the system. While you update your antivirus software and
run a full system scan, use the emergency tools from MVP Doug Knox:

Hi,
You were right, Stinger found a virus in wnetmgr.exe. It
was also preventing Norton AV from running.

I am having a similar problem. I recently tracked an Adware virus and purged it using about 6 spyware programs. Now many utilities do not start on start up. Including antivirus, messenger (msn) keyboard utilities etc. I likey deleted these files trying to track the rogue virus (which is gone) The prgrams are still ontact, but the auti start up on windows boot up isfailing.
