Programs closing all by themselves?

I cant run task manager. it opens then closes immediately; has for months. FRUSTURATING
random sites on the internet kick me out of the internet completely.
Tried all the user, network, system, and perfomance settings unhidden.
i run cox cable internet with xp.
sometimes computer gets automatic shutdown dialog box (remote server / runtime error something?)

can anyone please help?
