Program won't start but shows up in taskmanager under processes.

I just bought a new computer about a week ago and some programs that worked
fine on an older (also using Win XP) computer don't seem to work on my new
one. The programs (Cinema 4D, Adobe Reader, WinAce and others) when I double
click on the executable start up without showing the intro screen (I do see
the little timer next to the cursor) but then do nothing. In the Task
Manager, under processes they show up but not under applications.

I already uninstalled and reinstalled several times but that didn't seem to
work.
 
You did not state whether the old PC was running XP with SP2 and
also is the new PC upgraded with SP2, or maybe SP1?
 
Both have SP 2 running, I think. It's a dell computer and one of the cd's
has windows XP and SP2 on it. On the CD it says that the software is already
installed.
