program too big to fit in memory

recently i was attempting to install a rather large file
using windows command prompt when i was confronted with
the error message "Program too big to fit in memory". I
always thought that this was a problem with the age old
versions of windows such as win 95 but to find it on
windows xp command prompt was a bit of a shock.
unfortunately this file cannot be installed under any
other OS so does ne1 know a way to stop the error please?

I also have this problem but I have just installed a fresh copy of Windows XP and am using 1Gb of RAM. I agree in that I thought this was an old DOS higher memory region problem and as XP is not written around DOS I am at a bit of a loss. I will continue to look for a solution.
