program shut downs

Greetings everyone

A friend thought their W2K Pro OS had been infected with the Win32/Zotob
virus shutting systems down throughout the nation. Everytime they tried to
open a program such as a system utility program (disc cleanup) etc, a window
would pop up stating the program encoutered errors and will have to be
restarted. Even trying to access "regedit" through the "run" program, a
warning of the same kind popped up. Also while trying to removed programs, a
similar message would pop up.

I downloaded the MS05-039 security patch, but it doesn't seem to do any
good. I have ran Anti Spyware (Beta). I even manually looked for the
"zotob.exe" file in the taskmanager, and the winnt folder, and didn't see it.
I am now confused as to whether this is the Win32/Zotob.A worm or not. I can
access and perform simple maintenance in Safe Mode. Has anyone else had such
problems as I am having? Any help would be much appreciated.

Assuming youve done an online scan eg www.symantec.com
Run the system file checker - see help for syntax, you will need win2k cd
Ant Spyware apps will not neccessarily detect a virus

Hi DL

Thanks for responding. I did run a scan through www.symantec.com for the
list of W32.Zotob viruses. At the end of the scan, symantec reported no
detections on the system. Very odd. I ran the sfc.exe like you said and
loaded the files straight from the W2K disc, but again, the same thing
happens when I try to access programs. Even when rerunning Microsoft's
AntiSpyware (Beta) I get the error message "program error ... GIANT
Antispywar.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will
need to restart the program ... An error log is being created."

I am getting this message everytime I try to open any program. Even Disc
Cleanup "cleanmgr.exe has generated errors ... etc, etc."

I can't even access the "cmd" prompt in run mode. Nor can I access regedit.
ALthough, I can acess all programs including "cdm," "regedit" and utilities
in "Safe Mode."

I have no idea what has hit the system. Any more suggestions?

Thanks
