program running - Windows XP hotfix #.....

After pulling up task manager I noticed numerous
programs that started with 'Windows XP HotFix' followed
by a group of numbers and letters. Not sure what these
do or where they came from. I also found this list of
Windows XP HotFix programs when I went to Add/Remove
Programs in Control Panel. Im not sure if this is some
virus or these are actuall legit files. I did delete one
of them thinking they were part of a LARGE number of
popup adds. Now my computer after booting up and getting
to the desk top will suddenly will shut the power off
instantly (not shutting down windows). Any suggestions?

You should not be tempted to "uninstall" any "Hotfixes" listed in the
Add or Remove Programs section. They are listed there in the event
your computer does not function properly after they are installed.
Uninstalling them will uninstall the actual patches which were downloaded
and installed from the Windows Update website.

Sounds like you corrupted your system files by uninstalling
a Windows XP critical update. Only thing to do now is a
"Repair Install".

You might see those in the Programs page if you were looking at the
pages for them in Internet Explorer - make sure you close all IE windows
and take another look

Apart from that, they would not be legitimate in Task Manager (from
r-click on Taskbar or CTL-ALT-DEL) *unless* you were in the middle of
installing a windows update and even then I don't think they would be
showing the names in that way .

Those are there so you could *uninstall* the patches from Windows
Update. Each corresponds to a folder of files needed for the purpose -
Windows\$NTUninstallQnnnnnn$ for the fix described at
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;nnnnnn

If you decide you will not want to uninstall a fix (and if all is
running smoothly you probably won't) then delete the folder. If you
then try in Add/remove, to Remove that one, it will fail, and you will
be offered the option of removing the entry there

Can't offer specific advice on the non-startup without knowing just what
you uninstalled and how. But a suggestion is to boot hitting F8 as BIOS
info goes to black, from the menu taking
Safe Mode - Command Prompt
and there giving
C:\Windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

which is System restore - then use it to restore to a point made before
you did the unfortunate delete
