I tried to remove a program listed in the "Change or
Remove Program" panel, but that did not work. The
program's website suggested deleting the files directly
in Program File/...etc, which I did, succesfully.
However, the program is still listed in the "Change or
Remove Programs" panel, and cannot be deleted.

Suggestions?

Thanks,

you mean in the add and remove programs area ... First
off never delete anything in the program file , When ever
deleting anything always go to the add and remove program
area first and if you can't delete it from there try it
in safe mode in the add and remove programs area , Okay
once you have deleted off from the add and remove program
area then and only then do you delete it from the program
files area ... This is what i usually do , I always go
first to the add and remove programs area and delete from
there once it off from there , then i would do a serach
for that program and whatever it finds i would delete
from there after that i view my recycling bin and delete
from there as well , then reboot my computer ... Now what
you have to do is redownload the program again because it
was remove from the program files area first which is
wrong to do , so redownload the program again and then
reboot , go to the add and remove programs area and do
what i suggested

I tried that to start with. The problem was that the
software would not get removed through the add and remove
area, and the vendor suggested I remove it directly from
the Program Files... directory. That's why I'm stuck with
the listing.

I have tried to download the program again, and remove
correctly, but it won't work.

From what I can surmise, I think I must deal with some
registry entries. Do you know?

Are you saying that you try deleting the program while
you are in SAFE MODE under the add and remove program
area and it didn't work ???

YUP! That's exactly what I mean. I just tried it again.
Reloaded the program (MobipocketReaderPC.exe is the
install program), then went to Safe Mode and tried the
uninstall. Does not work. Now, on installation, Windows
XP warn's that it does not recognize the manufacturer of
the software, and warns again trusting it. I have had it
on other computers before, and know it won't do damange.
However, now I can't get rid of it cleanly. The listing
of it still remains in the Remove or Change program panel.
