profiling boot up time?

Most PC boots up very quickly when new, then slow down gradually. Is there a
way to figure out what software causes the slowness?

I see mention of a tool called bootvis. However, it seems microsoft is no
longer supporting it (no downloads). Is there a better tool available?

The 4 primary causes for slow bootup are (in no particular order):

1. Viruses and spyware,
2. Too many programs loading with Windows,
3. Lack of maintenance, and
4. Insufficient hardware.

Hi Peter,

Thanks Ted for useful suggestions. I just want to add something.

You may Use Clean Boot to eliminate third party interference Boot into
Clean Boot environment first. Steps are below.

1. Click Start, click Run, type "msconfig" (without the quotation marks) in
the Open box, and then click OK.
2. In the Startup tab, click the "Disable All" button.
3. In the Services tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" checkbox,
and then click the "Disable All" button.
4. Click OK and restart your computer.

Windows XP

If your issue is resolved at this point, repeat the process, but add one
check back each time to the list of files listed under the "Selective
Startup" menu until the issue reappears again, when this happens follow
these steps:

1. Select the tab for the last file you enabled and remove the checks from
each line in that file.
2. Click the Apply button
3. Reboot your computer and verify the issue has not reappeared.
4. Replace each check mark one line at a time.
5. Click the Apply button.
6. Reboot your computer.

When the issue reappears you will then know which line or command is
causing the problem.

Hope it helps.

Mr. Vincent what sort of advice do u give to ur clients. the poor guy
might have a firewall and antivirus running on his PC and u want him to
disable all but microsoft services in the boot menu and u want him to
get rid of all startup services. That's y people no longer trust
Microsoft. Imagine if he does that and his antivirus and firewall are
no longer loading, his computer might be infested with all sorts of
viruses and his security might be compromised. Please do strive to
provide quality service and if u cannot answer or solve a problem,
atleast don't pretend!!!!!

PC boots up slow is because of installing too many softwares,
A lot of softwares all will start with the system, Should delete their
start procedure.
Winxp and Win2003 can run "msconfig" --"startup", delete otiose
procedure,
The Win2000 has to be arrived a registration form to carry on deletion.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce\Setup

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

but, it so troublesome, i recommend "Security expert" with you.
it can light loose of resolve these problems,Your needs to be click
"Autorun manage" ,
Not only such, you can go to http://securityexpert.cnns.net/startup.htm
to know more.
The system can also protect you isn't attackstoned with hacker by
virus.

Hi Asim,

I'm sorry if I provided the wrong suggestions.

However I never mean to let the customer disable any firewall or
anti-virus. The suggestion I provided is just a troubleshooting method
which help us to make sure that which application caused the slow down when
the PC boot up.

Anyway, thanks for your advice that we will pay attention to our support
quality.

In addition, you may call me Vincent or Mr Xu instead of Mr Vincent. Thank
you for using Microsoft Newgroup.

Best regards,

I came across this utility, trial version cud be checked out-
http://greatis.com/utilities/bootlogxp/
Other things you cud check as well would be to ensure the system i
free of junk, run a disk cleanup if you havent in a long time, ru
chkdsk and defragment (it would be gud to defrag the MFT and pagin
file with a third party tool if they are severly fragmented) and als
make sure you have enough RAM for the software u run. Also try deletin
your prefetch. Besides that, needless to say spyware scans
