Profile Wouldn't Load

I have just had a very scary experience!

I powered up my notebook and after entering my pw I got a message on screen
saying my profile could not be found, after entering my pw three more times
and the same message appearing windows loaded "a" desktop but not mine.

For some reason only known to XP it created me a new profile and re-named my
old on e"TEMP" - panic struck I copied the contents of "My Documents" to the
new profile whilst I could still see them & re-booted.

After re-booted I entered my pw again, windows loaded my original desktop,
profile and documents the TEMP profile now empty!

My question is "What the hell happened?"

I am upto date with my patches & am running MS's own security software
"OneCare" so I am confident it's not virus or otherwise related, so I am
puzzled. I have used XP Pro since it first came out and have never seen this
before.

If you lose Full Control permissions to your profile folder, in the
%SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings folder, Windows XP
will create a new one the next time you log on.

Duplicate profile folders exist under the "Documents and Settings" folder

Perform what Wesley recommends but don't be so sure it is not because of
malware . One Care is not so good products and the detection rate is not high
enough.
