I'm having troubles with upgrades for XP Pro as it keeps telling me that I
have an unregistered version of XP. I've recently purchased an OEM version of
XP Pro and would like to update the product key, how do I do this without
reloading XP all together?

There's no way to simply change the Product Key. Product Keys are
bound to the specific type and language of CD and/or license (OEM,
Volume, retail, full, or Upgrade) with which they are purchased. For
example, a WinXP Home OEM Product Key won't work for any retail version
of WinXP Home, or for any version of WinXP Pro, and vice versa. An
upgrade's Product Key cannot be used with a full version CD, and vice
versa. An OEM Product Key will not work to install a retail product.
An Italian Product Key will not work with an English CD. Bottom line:
Product Keys and CD types cannot be mixed & matched.

If you are trying to install a WinXP Service Pack and getting the

You need to purchase and a _legitimate_ retail or OEM full license
of WinXP Pro to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation,
using the new CDs and Product Keys.

True, but the OP did not state he had a pirated copy, what he may have
is a machine that the manufacturer had installed an XP image with a key
already entered. We had this problem when we purchased a number of
machines for one of our undergraduate labs. The machines were identical
so the manufacturer installed XP to one machine, made an image of that
machine and then transfered that image to all the other machine,
result, 20 or so machines with the same product key so rather than
reinstall XP to all the units we just changed the product keys to the
correct ones that were attached to the side of the units using a key
modifier.

As an aside Microsoft have just released a product key modifier utility
