product identification number

You have a "Product Key" which came on the box or in with the CD if you
bought XP separately, or the supplier of your computer must give it to you
if you bought a computer with XP installed. Either way, you should have it.

Hi

Do you mean the 25 character Product Key (used to install XP) or the PID
(used to contact MS with for a problem)? If the latter - right click on My
Computer and select Properties. The PID is 20 character number you in the
format of:

xxxxx-xxx-xxxxxxx-xxxxx

Open the Microsoft product {which you did not mention} and go to Help,
About. You should find the Product ID listed.

The product Key as per the post by Alias and the product ID as per Will Denny and Don Mi.

Product ID and Product Key is 2 different items

You will need to be more specific as to which product and what

The Product *ID* is created during the installation process and is
prominently displayed on the General Properties tab of the My Computer
icon.

The Product *Key* is required to perform the installation, and is
either stored on the CD packaging on a bright orange sticker that says
"Do not lose this number," or is on a label affixed to an OEM
computer.

Is there a relationship between Product Identification (PID) and Product Key
and if so how do I relate them? Ed May

The Product *ID* is created during the installation process and is
prominently displayed on the General Properties tab of the My Computer
icon. It is used to obtain/qualify for technical support (limited
though that may be) from Microsoft.

The Product *Key* is used to "prove" ownership of a legitimate
license and is required to perform the installation, and is either
stored on the CD packaging on a bright orange sticker that says "Do not
lose this number," or is on a label affixed to an OEM computer.

I'm having problems installing Windows XP Pro. I try to use Microsoft's
email help, but it requires a PID. I don't have the PID yet, just the
Product Key. How do I get past this?

I'm with Dan. I need to contact email support but I can't get in to my
installation (which is why I need to contact support). How do I get my PID?

I too am in the same spot. A Windows XP Pro upgrade from XP Home edition has
failed in the middle of the setup process. I am unable to boot back into Home
Edition and I am unable to contact Microsoft Support for help because I
cannot access the XP Pro PID.

Talk about being stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Is there any generic number I can put into the Microsoft Support chat line
that would allow me to access their system and ask my question about
recovering from this issue?

Other thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Mitch

Why not just ask you're question here? Someone may be able to help.

Please include as many details as possible including, error messages, how are you installing, clean install or upgrade, retail version or OEM version. Tell us about the system you are installing on.

The product key number is on the jewel case that your Windows XP CD came in.
No one on here can 'give' you a product code key. If you have lost your copy
of XP then you will need a valid receipt of purchase and then I suggest you
take a look at these details from my website:
