On my home computer I have Windows XP which was purchased
about 18 months ago with a new computer but is not an OEM
version. It was registered and activated and has worked
fine until today.
Now (whichever user logon I use)it says loading personal
settings but then gives a popup window stating

Windows Product Activation
* This copy of Windows must be activated with Microsoft
before you can log on. Do yo want to activate Windows now.

It has not been possible to get past this so far -- any
ideas??

There have been several posts which refer to a Windows file being deleted
which contains the activation information. You could Google this group for
"Windows Product Activation" for more details.

Have you tried reactivating Windows either by calling the tool free number
or using the on-line activation? You should be able to call the number,
explain to them what happened, and they'll give you a code to type in.

Good luck.

ive got the same problem but havent got a clue how to get
rid of it! Dell who i bought the computer off dont want
to know

have u by any chance updated any xp software from the msn
site! i have, could be that!! cant think of anything else

This has happened to my PC, twice. The first time I was able to get it
re-activated over the Internet. As for the second time, I needed to phone
MS.

I was told that if you change hardware (including drivers) that XP may count
down the allotted changes count. When the allotted count reaches Zero (0),
XP asks for activation.

And you thought maybe that MS's copy-protection is flawless? Don't want to
be in this situation, then stop buying products that are copy-protected.
These copy-protected products are damaged goods, and they don't even put the
slightest dent into software piracy.

There was a higher piracy rate in 1994, before the PC boom, than there is
today, and had been steadily dropping before any retail software manufacture
introduced copy-protection in their products. Since the members of the BSA
started to introduce copy-protection the piracy rate has basically remain
flat.

The corporate copyright elite have been blowing smoke up everybodies ass
whining about consumers, but when was the last time you saw a BSA, RIAA, or
MPAA member on the unemployment line or filing for bankruptcy? That's
right, never!

When you buy copy-protected products all you do is pay the corporate
copyright scumbags to treat you like your a potential thief, not as a
respected paying customer. And as long as we consumers keep buying
copy-protected products, the corporate copyright elite will make it hardered
and hardered for consumers to use the products we buy!

I try system restore before you notice the activation request.
Unplug or disconnect your internet connection.

You can do it from safe mode. Press f8 twice and chose safe mode.
Log on.
Restore system.
Boot up.
Scan for viruses before contecting to the internet.

Some viruses and Porn dialers have been know to mess around with these
files.

Plus, sometime the wpa.dbl file just gets corrupted all on it own. It is an
encrypted database file, and MS has yet to create a database file that
doesn't get corrupted all on it's own from time to time.

PA is just corrupt! Consumers don't deserve it! Copy-protection is all
about corporate greed, and the consumer be damned!

If you have SP1 installed, you should be able to say no to that and get
a normal boot; then get on the net, run
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Activate Windows and
take Activate on the internet once again, in about 20 seconds.

If you do not have SP1 you will only be able to get into Safe Mode,
Administrator access, so there will be no net access and you will have
to run that and take the alternative of phoning in; swapping one long
number for another.
