Processor usage constantly 50%

Hi i have a 1.1ghz machine that should be able to handle windows xp pro.
I am woried because in the performance part of task manager my processor
usage is constantly displayed at 50% while running no programs.

But the weird bit is that in the open processes section of task manager my
system idle prossess are recorded around the 99% mark.

Also jsut to confuse things even more when i start the pc in safe mode i
dont have this problem at all.

Does any one know what could be causing this problem?

You do not have a problem,99% system idle is normal.

That's strange. I always assumed that both panes of the
task manager used the same data. I've never seen them be
different. The only thing I can imagine is that your
video driver is so feeble that it's taking 50% of your
CPU to draw the CPU graph. That seems a little far-
fetched though.

Changr the taskman update freq to 10 seconds and see if you get a better
reading.

Hi again i know this isn't a virus problem as this is a clean install of XP
and i tried putting the refresh rate of the graph up but its made no
diffrence. I have also updated my graphics drivers from nvidia which had no
change and uninstalled them, that had no change either (but windows installed
its temp drivers b4 i got a good look).

Do you know what else it could be I can post a picture of my tasmanager if
you want it.

Is their any posibility i might neeed some sort of bios update or it could
be any other drivers effecting it.

The thing that still puzzles me the most is the fact that the idle procesor
usage is at 99% when more than 50% of the processor is being used.

If Idle is at 99% all ought to be well. How the Performance page gets to
show more is unclear (though I do not trust that much). If there were a
virus interfering (and there are viruses that do) I would expect it to
affect both; but a thorough check against malware is always a good thing
if you are suspicious
