Which processor is faster, the Celeron 2.4GHx or the Pentium 4
Processor running at 2.4GHz?

Same speed, different cache, which makes the pentium
faster, that's why it's more money. IF you are talking
about the P4 2.4 C, which uses 'hyperthreading
technology' if your MB supports, the P4 is much faster
for CPU intensive aplications. (HTT makes the OS see the
processor as two processors and splits the work between
them - kind of like having a dual processor system.)

SiSoftSandra says my 2.4 performs equal to a 3.189 Ghz
non HT processor.

Deciding which to buy is easy, if you just send e-mail
and use a word processor, you will NEVER see a diffenence
between a Celeron and Pentium, but if you want to edit DV
movies, or use Photoshop, or some program like that,
there will be a noticible difference.

:-)

Aside from email and word processing, would web surfing be affected by
Celeron vs. Pentium?

Not really, web surfing is fine with a $50 Celeron, but if
you do a lot of tasks, a P4 is faster at higher cost.

The P4 has a larger on-chip cache which will make it rather faster in
most situations. Whether the extra justifies the price difference is
another matter. Also the P4 may allow a higher front side bus speed
(the two overlap) which with a suitable motherboard will allow use of
faster RAM - that is the more important aspect

In that case you can drop a pound of feathers on my toe if you will let me
drop a pound of gold on yours! (You don't get to keep the gold) :-)

A pound of feathers.

Note that feathers are measured in pounds avoirdupois, which has
16 ounces to a pound. Gold is traditionally measured in Troy
weight--only 12 ounces to a pound. The ounces are the same and
the pound of feathers is heavier.

But this is off-topic. Now back to our regularly scheduled
Windows questions.
