I'm looking for a freeware program that will allow me to see which
processes are running on my computer// Something that will allow me to
know if I can end a process...or if it needs to be running

thanks in advance

Nothing will let you know if a process should be running. That is
something you have to figure out for yourself. This program will
tell you just about everything that you need to know about the
processes that are running, so you can decide what to do with
them.

CurrProcess v1.11 - Freeware Process Viewer
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/cprocess.html

CurrProcess utility displays the list of all processes currently
running on your system. For each process, you can view the
list of all modules (DLL files) that the process loads into memory.
for all processes and modules, additional useful information is also
displayed: product name, version, company name, description of
the file, the size of the file, and more.

In addition, CurrProcess allows you to do the following actions:
Change the priority of a process.
Kill a process.
Dump memory of process into a text file.
Create HTML report containing information about a process with
the list of all modules that it loads into memory.
Save the list of all running processes into text or HTML file.
Copy process or module information to the clipboard.

EndItAll lists all processes running and tells you what ones are system
and have to be operating. Then gives you the options to close or kill
any or all as you wish. I use it all the time when I'm going to run
scandisk or defrag. you can even disable screensavers and power
management with one click.small prog 879k for the folder

I use AppSwat for this (Sorry, I don't have the URL handy). What's
significant to me is that the process list is often more thorough than
what I see with CTRL+ALT+DEL. AppSwat has better manners, too.

I had some problem with Enditall. I recall that this was actually
Ziff-Davis payware. I could never get it to run properly on my Windows
ME box.

FileMon is rather cool. It shows running processes in real-time. This is
what tipped me off to the amount of processes being run cyclically by
Sygate Firewall, and even more by Avast antivirus. With both of these
running, my system can hiccup when feeding audio streams. Without this
utility, I would have never had any idea what was causing the problem.
But with FileMon, I can see these processes along with the program ID
and icon, scrolling furiously in bursts up the screen. I've got other
utilities mentioned by other people in response to the OP. I haven't
even gotten into the regular functions of FileMon. I haven't seen anyone
else mention this utility.

I've never known Enditall as payware. First saw it on PcMag's site. Gee
I've used it all this time and it never asked me for money. Wonder if
it's broken?<g>

I should have been clearer. PC Mag/Ziff Davis now charge a fee for
downloading. I don't recall the nature of the charges. I recall that
it's nice stuff, but hasn't been freeware for a long time.

The site I listed here is still a free working version. Just tried it
again. Only problem I see with Enditall is not tested for XP so that's a
crap shoot.
