Processes not closing

After closing an application it remains running as a process. Opening up the
same application again will create a new process so that there will then be
multiple instances of the same process, although only the one that hasn't
been closed is usable.

Any ideas as to why applications continue to run after closing as far as the
process not ending is concerned? And it's not just a refresh issue as the
processes are eating up system memory.

WinXP Pro
1GB ram
(that's all i think should be needed for troubleshooting issues)

Thanks for any input

Have you discussed the issue with a support rep for your mystery program?

You may want to keep the name of the application a secret for reasons
unknown, but it will not help anybody to help you..

It's not one specific application, it's all applications. Whether it's a
game I frequently play bf1942, or windows media player, they stay running as
a process after I've closed them. So, it's not a one specific app problem
but a windows problem. I even see dangling svchosts running when they
shouldn't be among other things.

Beyond that, anyone have any idea why windows isn't actually ending these
processes?
