Problems with XP

I am having major problem with my XP machine.....
1.Media player 9 will not start....comes up with internal
error
2. IE will not display some gif.'s and some buttons on
webpages do nothing when clicked and blank dropdown boxes
3. Recovery comes up as a blank window
4.windows search is blank
5.windows help will not start

This is all after I installed a virus scanner from avast
I removed the prog with the uninstall tool....it still
does all the thing above

What is going on...anyone else runned in to this

If, as you say, the problem was caused by the program that you uninstalled:
Have you tried restoring from a System Restore Point from a date just prior
to your installation of the offending program? If that doesn't fix the
problems, I'd try a Repair Install:

Install. There is a step by step walk through including images. Your
software, settings, data files, desktop, etc. are retained.

Windows XP Repair Installs have save me a few times...
