Problems with the USB contoller

I am trying to fix a weird problem on my homemade computer- that is, a
computer I had assembled at a mom & pop. It is an Intel Core2 motherboard in
a standard case. I bought Windows XP (OEM) from Fry's electronics, and have
re-installed several times over the past few years to get a clean fresh
system. I used the diskette that came with the motherboard for RAID control.
I have read some of the postings to this newsgroup to find a fix, yet
nothing really hit the spot.

The problem is that when I try to connect specific USB devices there is no
way to get a complete connection. I have successfully connected two
different memory sticks, and after installing the driver, I have connected a
Epson scanner. Yet when I try to connect a music player, or now, a digital
camera, there is no way of getting the device to "work properly." I
downloaded the zip compressed version of the Contax camera driver, and upon
installation there is the final message that my computer is "not adequate"
for the diver installation. I can't seem to hack it. Is there any
salvation? Thanks

Just inquirying but were the USB drivers, particularly the USB 2.0
drivers, installed for the motherboard? These should be found in the
cdrom along with the motherboard itself. A look in Device Manager can
confirm this. Under Universal Serial Bus controllers, is there a
listing for USB2 Enhanced Host Controller?

The chipset installation utility for youre board has the USB drivers, however
it wont completely install itself till xp SP2 gets installed, before SP2
some of
the utility runs, after SP2 you'll see the entire chipset utility run.Intel
usually
doesnt have USB drivers on the cd,if you want a intel USB drivers to
intall,locate
the downloads for the P845PEBT2 Those will install on youre board.

USB devcie problems are a pain to fix. You are having problems adding
the music player and digital camera now. How are you connecting them
( at the same time as the other devices) and onto which USB ports.

USB ports provide power over the USB "channels" but this power is
limited. You need to test each device without any other devices
connected first. If each device works on their own, self powered USB
hubs may help to provide more power over the USB ports.

Thank you for your suggestions, yet I havn't found a cure. I pryed the
Intel site for info and came up with two dead ends. One - there's no
specific USB driver (only thing close was a Management Engine driver?). Two
- in BIOS, as well with the OS, the USB2 was activated (I had trouble
accessing BIOS because the boot was so fast). I have decided to send the
computer in for doctoring at the original mom & pop. Thank you.

For USB2, you'd want to verify the BIOS settings. Sometimes there is an
option to disable USB2 or make other changes. You could have a look
in the BIOS first.

USB2 support is provided in Service Pack 1 for WinXP. Your WinXP disk
could be an original version (a number of years old), or could have
SP1 or SP2 integrated into it. In those latter two cases, the USB2
driver would be provided by Windows.

Chip makers have been dissuaded, by licensing requirements, to no longer
include USB2 drivers. The idea at Microsoft is, the user is required to
get SP1 or SP2 onto their computer, to get their USB2 working.

This site has some info on USB. But don't go grabbing "hot fixes" at
random, because they may no longer be a valid solution to the problem.

I called the mom & pop, to no avail. He suggested I plug the camera into
the back, yet I've already seen this camera work on the computer with a
previous OS intall. I tryed plugging the camera into the back. I then went
to Intel and looked at what the BIOS update fixed, on a prior update release
there was an USB2 fix, so I downloadedand installed the latest update and no
fix. Maybe the camera's too old? The latest BIOS update includes previous
update fixes - right? Thanks
