Hey!

I have problems with the Help-system in Access 2000.
I am standing with the cursor on "OpenRecordset" and then pressing F1.
After a moment the following error message occur:

----------
Microsoft Access can't show Help
An error occurred, and this function doesn't work correctly longer.
Would you like to repairer this function now?

---------- (My translation into English)

I have tried to answer "Yes" and the repair procedure has run (asking fore
the installation CD), but the result is a blank window with no text at all.

I have tried to repair the hole Office Pack, but in vain.
I have tried to reinstall the Office Pack having among others chosen Access
total and VBA help under Tools, but still in vain.

Do some one have a suggestion, who I can solve this problem?

Hi Ebbe,

I suggest trying to repair your installation of Internet Explorer, since the Help system is HTML
(Hypertext Markup Language) based help. Here is a KB article that shows how to do this for IE 6
running on Windows XP:

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP

Try this KB article first, before attempting to repair Internet Explorer:

You receive an error message when you try to display help on a Microsoft Windows XP-, Windows
2000- or Windows Me-Based computer
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=249065

It looks like the resolution is to obtain service pack 1. Actually, I highly recommend that you
have service pack 3 installed on Office 2000 by now. You'll probably also want to make sure that
you have the latest service pack for the JET database engine (although this has nothing to do
with Help not working):

How to obtain the latest service pack for the Microsoft Jet 4.0 Database Engine

Hey Tom!

I have already run the "sfc /scannow" that was suggested in the link, You
have posted.
Under this run it several times asked for the Windows XP Professional CD. My
problem is that I haven't that CD because I have installed Windows XP Home
Edition!
My only choice was to ignore these files.

What do You suggest next?

Hi Ebbe,
What do You suggest next?
The instructions to run "sfc /scannow" are contained in the link to the first KB article that I
sent you (KB 318378). The follow-up message that I sent, which points to KB 249065, indicates
that the cause of your problem can be related to not having service pack 1 installed for Office
2000. If you open Access, and then click on Help > About Microsoft Access, do you see any
indication of the service pack level? My copy shows the following:

Microsoft Access 2000 (9.0.6926 SP-3)

When you do the same thing, what do you see? If you have service pack 1, you should see a
different version number with "SP-1" indicated. If you do not have service pack 1, then my only
suggestion is to download and install it. A link for obtaining this service pack is included in
KB 249065:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=249065

Also, pay attention to the paragraphs marked "IMPORTANT" and "NOTE" in the Resolution section of
this KB article.

On the issue of your system prompting for the Windows XP Professional CD, when you have only
installed Windows XP Home Edition, I haven't a clue here. Have you tried inserting your Windows
XP Home Edition CD at this prompt? Perhaps this is Microsoft's way of encouraging you to upgrade
to Win XP Pro? <smile>

Microsoft Access 2000 (9.0.6926 SP-3)

My about Microsoft Access shows "Microsoft Access 2000 (9.0.6926 SP-3)"
exactly as yours.
I suppose not to install KB 249065 or ....?

I was a little too quick to take action from Your first posting, before You
changed plan in Your second posting.
I tried to feed the beast with my XP Home CD but it wasn't good enough :-(

Ebbe

Okay, I don't know if it will work, but try repairing Microsoft Office. From within Access,
click on Help > Detect and Repair...

At least we appear to have ruled out the service pack issue as a possible cause. Have you tried
the section titled "WORKAROUND" in KB 249065?
