Problems with my internet being disconected frequently

I am using Windows Vista Basic andI have internet connnection similar to a
DSL, it runs through my phone line but it is high speed. I have to login on
a website with my infomation to be allowed access to the internet. But
normally you only have to do this when you either shut down your computer or
it has been left online for several days. Sometimes when i try to get onto
internet explorer or play world of warcraft it will say that there is no
internet connection, even if i had just been on a few mins ago. Sometimes
my internet connection will be lost midway through surfing a website.

At first i thought it was my router so i switched it off and after a little
time tunred it back on, but that did not help. I then restarted my
computer and the problem was fixed but later on it happened again. this
problem has persisted for over a month now. I thought it might jsut be my
service provider but a friend living in the same complex as me has the exact
same service but he is running xp and he has no problems. We even went so
far as to switch modems to no aval , the problem still persists.

If anyone has any suggestions or comments please respond, anything is
appreciated

What you should have also done is swap routers, if the other person had one,
and seen if the problem followed. What you should do is hook the machine to
the modem and see if the problem follows. For all you know, the NIC on the
machine or the cable from the router to the NIC could be bad.

I don't know if the cause is the same but when I had DSL, I had the same
issue. While I didn't install provider software, the DSL provider usually
installs connection software. In it, I found a setting that automatically
disconnects after a specified period of inactivity. If you have connection
software installed, check its properties for such a setting as you might be
able to disable it.
