Problems With Halo

Steve

I tried running Halo on my computer, and it wouldn't work
with my onboard video so I put in a 32mb PCI video card
(with all the acceleration stuff I need) I got the video
card to work properly and override the old one, but when
I start Halo, it tells me that it couldn't start the
hardware acceleration and to run DXDIAG. I ran it, and my
hardware acceleration IS working. What's the problem
here? Can anyone help? (I just re-installed DX 9.0b too)

Well, there were two options in there, one for
AGP/Onboard and one for PCI, so I switched it to PCI

Well, my PC is an HP, and at the HP screen it gives me
the option to press F1 and enter some setup stuff. These
aren't the BIOS (I don't think so at least) but it had an
option there for either AGP/Onboard or PCI video, and I
chose PCI
I did disable the driver in the device manager, though.

The card is probably less than 2 years old.

Yes, that *is* the BIOS.... sounds like you went to the right place to do
so, you may want to check with HP's support to see if there are known issues
with this.

32 megs isn't a lot anymore for a video card. Check the system
requirements to make sure the game doesn't require more. Also, did
you use the video card dfrivers that came with the card or install new
ones from the manufacturer's website. Check that, and you may want to
check with the chipset manufacturer (ie nvidia, radeon, etc) and see
if there are reference drivers. These will be unsupported, but will
undoubtably be better than the manufacturer's driver's.

Get a newer video card. I have a Radeon 9200 SE 128 meg card by Gigabyte. You need a 4.1 catalyst driver or higher to run the game without errors, but other than that my graphics look nice. It is only like $56 on www.newegg.com

I bought a Jetway FX5200 128MB for $99, also some Radeon or Geforce based
graphics cards often have PCI versions if your motherboard does not sport
an AGP slot.

Halo, according to the boxed product, requires AT LEAST a 32MB video card that is ALSO (this is important) capable of Hardware Transform and Lighting. Good pieces of information here would be what kind of video card you are using, as well as what DXDIAG reports.

Halo is a serious resource pig. I don't think it was properly thought out
for PC as it was previously a consol game adapted for PC. I have a 9600Pro
(128 megs of fairly fast ram) and even that card does some huffing and
puffing if you want decent eye candy. Seems to be running better on Cat 4.3s
though.

Open windows update and see if there are any downloads you may need; most
importantly, go to Support, query Halo.....there should be some downloads
you may need. I was just there, but I was looking for a MOH fix.
