problems with FrontPage extensions

can anyone help? I have a website on an independent server. I run Windows XP, use FrontPage 98 to create the site and FrontPage extensions to upload it onto my webspace. I've been out of action so my site hasn't been updated since the New Year. I've never previously had any problems but now I can't upload any files onto my webspace. I keep getting a dialog box appearing which says "Server error: An error occurred accessing your FrontPage web files. Authors - if authoring against a web server please contact the webmaster for this server's site. Webmasters - please see the server's system log for more details". The company hosting my site have been trying to rectify it for weeks - they've even put me on their most up-to-date server and reset everything from scratch but I still can't upload my website. Does anyone have any ideas what's going wrong? Is the problem at my end and if so what's causing it

thanks.

frontpage98 is really old and it had a lot of bugs....
after 98 there was 2000, 2002XP and now 2003
perhaps you should get an upgrade.

Another idea is to try to find a free web server that uses frontpage
extensions to test your computer with it.
If you have the same problem there too it means its your computers fault.

this is a probable one here: http://www.1accesshost.com/

here are more free web servers

I think the company who handle my webspace have had a serious upgrade over the last few months. I never had any problems uploading stuff before with FrontPage 98 so is it possible that what they've done to their system has now made 98 incompatible? I have asked them this on a couple of occasions but haven't had a reply from them.

Hi Gort,

Have them change your user name and password, then reset the front page
extensions. Works every time. Good luck!

Hi Kell

I think they've actually changed my username and password on a couple of occasions but the problem's still there. By reset FrontPage extensions what exactly do you mean? Is that something I can do at my end cos I'm sure the company handling my webspace have already done this. I don't know if it's of any help but when I first went to FrontPage to try publishing my site after I'd updated it and realised there was a problem I searched through all the files in my webfolder to see if I'd picked up a virus during the months I was out of action due to the fact that I'd suddenly started receiving thousands of spam from my website server. What I did find lurking in my web folder was a file approximately 2.5mb in size with a .db extension. I've never put that file there and it wasn't there the last time I'd updated my site in the New Year and as I'm the only person with access to my computer how on earth did it get there? I deleted it straight away and I've done numerous virus scans which have revealed nothing so I'm getting quite desperate now because my website's been taken off my webspace and as I still can't republish it I'm losing business left, right and centre.

Are you hosted on a Linux or Unix server?
If so, and they upgraded to FP 2002 extensions, they are not compatible with
FP 98. You will have to upgrade to a higher version of FP, or find a new
host.

Hi To

I believe I'm hosted on a Unix server and I think you've just confirmed what I was fearing - that the server's upgraded to FP 2002

Thanks for your help - I'm off to buy FrontPage 2000 :)

I'm having the exact problem! Help! My ISP can't figure it out either and
recommended going to FrontPage 2000 or higher.
