Hi all,

Have been trying to make a template and make myself familiar with the
process by following instructions given at
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/CreateATemplatePart2.htm.
The problem starts after I have defined the style for the style,
'Footer'. I have based it on 'Header' style, as instructed. After that,
when I try to insert the page number for the even page footer on its
left side, the whole area gets labeled as 'Page Number'. The result is
that even if I want to display some text in the footer area after
tabbing once, the text is expressed in the font and style defined for
the style 'Page Number'. Obviously, the font and style for the style
'Page Number' is different from 'Footer'. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
TechWriter.

I am not sure what you mean by "the whole area gets labeled as 'Page
Number'" or "when I try to insert the page number for the even page footer
on its left side." Perhaps you could provide more detail about what ou are
trying to do. THe styles for Footer and Pge Number are not necessarily the
same. If they are you can easily change that.

The example in the link is for something pretty advanced. I suggest
starting with something simple, if only to get the hang of it.

The instructions on the site say that on a even page footer, on the
extreme left side one should insert the page number and from then on
insert the desired text after pressing the tab button. For that, I
first defined the font for the style 'Page Number' to be larger and
bold, so that the page numbers are seen by the user easily. Next I
defined the style 'Footer', wherein the font is smaller, so that the
user doesn't feel any sort of 'noise' while reading the actual
instructions.

Now I came to the even page footer. I first inserted the page number on
the extreme left side, using the Header and Footer toolbar. After that
I pressed the tab button twice. When I typed in my company's name, the
font and style shown in the toolbar above was still that for the style
'Page Number'. So what I did was, type the company name, selected it
and then tried to impose the 'Footer' style on it, but to no avail. I
hope that explains my problem.

Hey Joe,

There's another little doubt I have. Suppose for the Layout tab in the
Page Setup dialog box in a template, I have chosen to have a different
header and footer for a first page and different headers and footers
for even and odd pages. Now if attach that template in the new
document, will new document also inherit the same options for headers
and footers, as described above, or do I need to manually choose them
from the Page Setup dialog box. Please help,

Thanx,
TechWriter

To be on the safe side, you could create your footer text *before* inserting
the page number, but it should suffice to insert the page number, then press
Ctrl+Spacebar to remove the Page Number character formatting, leaving the
Footer paragraph formatting. In my experience, however, the Page Number
format can be difficult to ditch.

Attaching a template will not transfer page layout or headers/footers. In
order to get these things into an existing document you need to create a new
document based on the template, then insert the existing document by pasting
(omitting the last paragraph mark) or using Insert | File.

Suzanne,
You spoke of creating a new document based on the template in order and
then copy-paste to inherit the page layout or headers/footers. By this,
do you mean attaching the template to the document through the
Tools>Templates and Add-Ins menu option or is there any other way?

I also have another question. I discovered that if I double-click on a
template document, I get a new document which though is fresh and
empty, has all the styles defined in the style window. But if I
right-click on the same template and click Open, I see the original
template. Now which would be the best way of these two, to create a new
document based on the template. Or is there any other way? Or, would
the Tools>Templates and Add-Ins option be a better option?

Opening the template allows you to edit it. That should be a rare occasion.
To create a new document, you use the New function in Explorer (which is the
default) or create a new document by selecting the template in the File New
dialog (assuming you have saved the template in the user templates folder).
When you create a new document based on the template, the template is
automatically attached to the new document. The document has not only the
styles from the template (which you also get when you attach it to a
document) but also all the page layout, boilerplate text, etc. Inserting an
existing document into a new one is the ONLY way to get the latter.
