I am trying to establish a network with a laptop, a desktop, a router/modem and a printer. I have succesfully configured my modem/router and both my computer are able to go online (yipee).

With regards to file/printer sharing: My laptop is able to acces the files on my desktop and the printer that is connected to it, but from my desktop I am not able to acces the files on my laptop. I get the message that I am not authorised to acces this network source and that I need to contact the person who monitors the server.

I don't understand why; I have temparerely uninstalled all my virus-scanners and firewalls and I if I execute ping the computers both connect perfectly.

I have contacted the company that produced my modem/router and they said that it is a software problem.

I hope you can help me soulve this problem!

Kind regards,
Hendrik de Graaf

On your desktop machine when you installed the printer drivers for the unit
attached to the laptop did you specify network printer and go through the
options in the printer setup wizard?

Henrik,

On any XP Pro computer, check to see if Simple File Sharing (Control Panel -
Folder Options - View - Advanced settings) is enabled or disabled. With XP Pro,
you need to have the SFS settings properly set on each computer.

With XP Pro, if SFS is disabled, check the Local Security Policy (Control Panel
- Administrative Tools). Under Local Policies - Security Options, look at
"Network access: Sharing and security model", and ensure it's set to "Classic -
local users authenticate as themselves".

With XP Pro, if you set the Local Security Policy to "Guest only", make sure
that the Guest account is enabled, thru Local User Manager (Start - Run -
"lusrmgr.msc"), and has an identical, non-blank, password on all computers. If
"Classic", setup and use a common non-Guest account, with identical, non-blank,
password on all computers.

For XP Home, OR for XP Pro with Simple File Sharing enabled, make sure that the
Guest account is enabled (for XP Pro, thru Local User Manager (Start - Run -
"lusrmgr.msc")), on each computer.

Cheers,
Chuck

Jeff,

If you can read this response, then you've already figured that out.

As to your problem, please start another thread, with a different Subject, with
your problem described with all detail, similar to Hendrik's post. The experts
here can find your posts, and reply to them, much easier if you have your own
thread.
