Problems with Error-Check, Defrag, and Safe Mode

I am running Windows XP Professional and having several
problems with disk maintenance. I am unable to complete
Error-Checking or Defragmentation on my Local Disk, and I
can't start up in Safe Mode.

When I attempt to do Error-Checking on the Local Disk, I
get an error that says "Windows was unable to complete
the disk check", and I also got an error message saying
that the disk check needs exclusive access to some
Windows files on the disk, but when I restart nothing
happens.

When I try to Defragment the Local Disk, I get an error
that says "Disk Defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is
scheduled to run on the volume (C. Please run
Chkdsk /f", but I am unable to run Error-Checking, which
I assume is the same as "Chkdsk".

I'm also unable to complete the disk scan "check for
consistency" scan that occasionally happens before
Windows starts. It says that it has encountered an error
and can't continue.

Finally, I can't start in Safe Mode. When I press F8
during startup and select Safe Mode, a long list of files
fills up the screen and stops at "multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)
partition(2)\Windows\System32\Drivers\Mup.sys". I don't
know what this means, but maybe someone else does.

I have done virus scans with updated definitions and
found nothing.
Any ideas on how to fix this stuff?

Not exactly, but I have found that installing a service pack often
fixes many annoying quirks.

For example, I have a memory card reader that is supposed to appear as
another drive in explorer. It didn't, only appearing in 'My Computer'
when double-clicked. Installing SP2 fixed that and several other
things.

Backup your data and give it a go, if you haven't already.
