just reading the info on what can and can't be done in shared workbooks and
it says that insert / name / define is not available ... and this caused me
to wonder if there are any known problems with using dynamic range names in
shared workbooks?

i also know that you can't create pivot tables, but can you refresh them and
have "new" categories show if the pivot tables are based on dynamic range
names

using excel 2000.

Cheers

I did a little test in xl2002 and found the answer.

What did you get when you tried it in xl2k? <vbg>.

I couldn't refresh the pivottable in a shared workbook--and I couldn't get to
the wizard, either.

Hi Dave

i don't have ver 2000 on my machine (only 2002 & 2003) which was one of the
reasons i posted the question instead of doing it myself :) ... it was in
prep for a meeting i had this morning where i was needing to say "off the
bat" if they could do what they want in 2000 and as i didn't actually know
what they wanted at that stage i was just getting all the info together that
i could find and as i don't have very much experience with shared workbooks
i thought it might be wise to ask.

However, as it turns out they don't need to share the workbook (nor do they
need to use pivot tables) so no problems there (and i've learnt something -
thanks to you - that i can store away for future reference).

Thanks for your time on this Dave,

Regards
JulieD
