Problems with Computer Stand by

When you click "Start" and "Turn off computer" on Windows XP, you know how it has the choices: "Stand By", "Turn Off", and "Restart"? The "Stand By" icon is no longer lit, and I can't choose it out of the three. Does anyone know how to turn it back on? It prevents my computer from being able to go into stand by. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you very much!!
