Problems with C drive getting overly full

I am starting to have frequent problems with my C drive getting too full and
would like to know why this is happening.

The balloon that pops up to tell me that my C drive has less than 200 MB
free is getting quite frequent, sometimes even daily. Just now, I was down
to 68 MB free and had to reboot the machine to make Windows shut up.

The thing is, I'm not consciously putting anything on the C drive so I can't
figure out why it is filling up!

A few weeks back, I did a cleanup and got the C drive to be about 1 GB
freespace. Since then, I haven't downloaded any new programs to the
downloads directory on C and haven't installed any new programs. I empty the
recycle bin and all the other stuff that shows up when you get the "C drive
too full" balloon and I shut the computer down each night. Despite that,
I've still only got 263 MB of free space on C today.

What else can cause my C drive to fill up?

I've already deleted every program that I can live without on the C drive;
the remaining programs are all ones that are very important to me and that
would be a hassle to uninstall and reinstall.

I'd love to solve this problem for once and for all, although I strongly
prefer a solution that doesn't involve buying any new hardware since money
is very tight right now.

I'm running XP Pro SP2.

hi rhino....just a curious observer here....how large is your c drive to
begin with....bob

Files that have an extension of .log, .tmp, .temp, service pack and security
updates (C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$ or
C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB823182$, etc), files that begin with the name
'Found001, 002, Etc.
What size is your hard drive?

In Internet Options config your Internet temp files to 50mb
Having said that you probably need a new slave drive, as if C drive doesnt
have enough free space you will probably have all sorts of probs.
I assume also that your sys is clear of malaware

You cannot manage your hard disk unless you ***know***
what you store on it, and where. These tools might help you:

80 GB, partitioned into 4 drives (C, D, E, and F). All are basically the
same size.

80 GB, split into 4 logical drives each 20 GB in size.
